York Musical Theatre Company presents an Amateur production by arrangement with the Really Useful Group Limited.

York Musical Theatre Company

Monday 31 March to Saturday 5 April 2014

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics by Don Black, Charles Hart
Book by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black, Charles Hart

Aspects Of Love tells a story of passion, love and loss across three generations of a family and their companions, set against the background of the cobbled streets of Paris to the mountains of the Pyrenees, Italy and Venice. It centres on Alex Dillingham, a young student travelling through France, who falls in love with the alluring actress Rose Vibert.
As the pair embark on a passionate affair, the unexpected arrival of Alex's uncle George, changes their lives forever as they come to appreciate how love changes everything.
The song Love Changes Everything was a huge hit for Michael Ball, who starred in the original London production in 1989.

This brand new production is set to be the theatrical event of the year.

While Sandy stresses to her new classmates the emotional attachment she and Danny had, Danny stresses the physical aspects of their relationship!

As the show goes on, the students at Rydell High have to deal with the angst of teenage life - love, gangs, the ups and downs of friendships.

In the end, Sandy and Danny resolve their differences and end up happily together.

13 The Musical

Pick Me Up Theatre

Wednesday 16 April to Saturday 19 April 2014

13 The Musical, the hit 2008 Broadway show – a grown-up story about growing up – is coming to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre next April.

The show focuses around the trials and tribulations of ‘Becoming A Man’. The world of Evan Goldman, a slightly confused pre-teen, turns upside down when his parents divorce and he's forced to move from busy New York to ‘the lamest place in the world’, Appleton Indiana, a small town in the middle of nowhere. He has one mission: get all the cool kids in school to come to his Bar Mitzvah, or else spend the rest of his academic career banished to the land of the Geeks. Easier said than done.

The star quarterback is threatening to ruin his life and his only friend, Patrice, won't talk to him. The school freak sees an ‘Opportunity’ for blackmail and gossiping girls are spreading the nastiest rumours. Sound Familiar? The typical teenage experience! Set to an unforgettable rock score from Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, 13 is a hilarious, high-energy musical for all ages about discovering that cool is where you find it, and sometimes where you least expect it.

A semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Venetian opera, which contains some of their most sparkling and tuneful work.

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Saturday 26 April 2014

Two recently married Venetian gondoliers are informed by the Grand Inquisitor that one of them has just become the King of "Barataria", but only their foster mother, whose whereabouts are unknown, can confirm which one. As Barataria needs a king to put down unrest in the country, they travel there to reign jointly, leaving their wives behind.

The Gondoliers discover that the King was wed in infancy to Casilda, the beautiful daughter of the Spanish Duke of Plaza Toro, and so it seems whichever of them is king is an unintentional bigamist. Casilda, however, is secretly in love with one of her family’s servants.

The Gondoliers’ wives arrive, wanting to know which of them is queen, and receive an unexpected answer

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company return to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre with Gilbert and Sullivan’s popular ‘Fairy Opera’

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Thursday 18 September to Saturday 20 September 2014

Written at the height of their creative powers, Gilbert and Sullivan’s Fairy Opera is regarded by many as their best collaboration.

Iolanthe sees the House of Lords (the bastion of ineffectiveness and privilege) and the political system come in for criticism, with the suggestion that the peerage should no longer be hereditary, but obtainable by ‘competitive examination’.

First performed in 1882, the topic is still very relevant today and shows how far (or not) we have come in 130 years!

Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd and son of Iolanthe, wants to marry Phyllis, a Ward of Chancery, but Phyllis' guardian, the Lord Chancellor, and half the peers in the House of Lords are in love with her and are determined to prevent the marriage from taking place.

Strephon, however, has a secret: he is half a fairy and the Fairy Queen is a powerful enemy. Soon the Peers and the Fairies are at war…

Can the Fairies reform the peerage and fill it with ‘persons of intellect’? Will the peers preserve their ‘cherished rights’? And will Strephon and Phyllis be separated forever?

Les Miserables - SE

An epic tale of broken dreams, passion and redemption, against the backdrop of a nation in the grip of revolution.

York Light Youth

Friday 31 October to Saturday 8 November 2014

In 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from 19 years of unjust imprisonment but finds nothing in store for him beyond mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in the hope of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways.

Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter, Cosette. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long.

Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables packs an emotional wallop that continues to thrill audiences all over the world.
