The History Boys
Britain's Favourite Play
Pick Me Up Theatre
Friday 20 February to Saturday 28 February 2015
Voted the "nation's favourite play" and hailed as "life-enhancing" when it first opened at the National Theatre, Alan Bennett's The History Boys is being staged at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York as part of a Pick Me Up Theatre school-themed double bill with Willy Russell's Our Day Out.
In a Northern town in the late 1980s, eight boys are being groomed for Oxbridge.
Hector, the eccentric English master, teaches the boys poetry that he hopes will prepare them for the ‘long littleness of life’.
But the league-table-obsessed Headmaster is not willing to leave them in Hector’s hands alone, and to complement him and the much put-upon history teacher Mrs Lintott, the Head employs Mr Irwin, a young teacher with a unique view on history, and how to get into Oxbridge.
As if soaking up Auden, Housman and understanding the causes of the Second World War weren’t taxing enough, the boys have also to try and unravel their emerging sexualities, and discover what school, university and education are really about.
Featuring: Joe Hudson, Lee West, Riley Anderson, Daniel McGuinness, Sam Baxter, Will Campbell-Burrell, George Stagnell and Sam Hird as THE HISTORY BOYS with lan Small as Hector, Adam Tomlinson as The Headmaster joined by Neil Foster and Barbara Johnson as teachers Mr lrwin and Mrs Lintott.
Our Day Out
Willy Russell's classic musical
Pick Me Up Theatre
Saturday 21 February to Saturday 28 February 2015
Our Day Out was a massive TV hit when it was originally written in 1976 – and in 2009 Willy Russell re-worked the script and added some fantastic songs (the songs and music co-written with director Bob Eaton) to create Our Day Out – The Musical.
Willy Russell said it was "one of the very very best theatrical experiences of my life – I can’t wait to do it again”.
A very funny and heartwarming story, Mrs Kay’s Progress Class are all on board and bound for Alton Towers until Mr Briggs gets on board! The destination changes to a zoo in North Wales but there is no stopping the fun on a trip for the class that always gets left behind.
Big dance numbers, instantly recognisable characters and songs so catchy you’ll be singing them for weeks, all feature.
"I’m in love with Sir
But Sir doesn’t care
Cos Sir’s in love with her
With the hair
The bleedin’ mare"
Our Day Out is playing alongside Alan Bennett's The History Boys in a school-themed Pick Me Up Theatre season at York's Joseph Rowntree Theatre.
