Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Thursday 20 September to Saturday 22 September 2018

Jorvik Gilbert & Sullivan Company return to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre for the 10th year with a performance of Princess Ida - a satire on the battle of the sexes.

The opera is loosely based on Tennyson's poem The Princess and sees the headstrong Princess Ida defy her arranged marriage and retire to a women's university.

Prince Hilarion, betrothed to her in infancy, sets out to win her heart by infiltrating her college with two trusted friends disguised as female students.

The opera features some of Sullivan's most enchanting music alongside quarrelsome kings, bumbling soldiers, cross-dressing courtiers and a fearsome army of female students.

Doug Scott A Crawl Down The Ogre Image

Doug Scott A Crawl Down The Ogre

Doug will be telling a thrilling story of hard climbing, team-work and survival against all odds.

Due North Events

Monday 8 October 2018

Doug Scott CBE and that other icon of mountaineering, Chris Bonington, made the first ascent of The Ogre (7285m) in the Karakoram range in July 1977. Their climb extended the boundaries of what had been achieved before at that altitude. But it was the subsequent descent from the summit in the dark, turning a catalogue of disasters that would have defeated most people, into an epic which has since entered mountaineering folklore. It was 24 years before The Ogre was climbed again.

Doug will be telling a thrilling story of hard climbing, team work and survival against all odds, in his famously laconic and humorous style. The talk has been refreshed with the aid of recently discovered photographs and material from diaries from other members of the team – Chris Bonington, Nick Estcourt and Clive Rowland - plus cine film and audio tapes recently discovered in an attic and made by the late Mo Anthoine on the expedition.

Proceeds from the talks will help support the work of Community Action Nepal canepal.org.uk. Doug will update the audience on CAN’s progress with post-Nepal Earthquake reconstruction of its projects.

The evening will include a sale of Nepalese goods, Christmas cards and posters, and will be followed by an auction of framed mountaineering prints signed by famous mountaineers, such as Reinhold Messner, Chris Bonington and Stephen Venables, to support the work of the charity. Doug will also be signing copies of his award-winning autobiography Up And About and his latest book, The Ogre – Biography of a mountain and the dramatic story of the first ascent
