Tuesday 16 April to Saturday 20 April 2013

Pick Me Up Theatre present the York Premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s classic musical Evita. The story follows the life of Argentine political leader Eva Peron, the second wife of Argentinian president Juan Peron, her early life, rise to power, charity work and eventual death from cancer at the age of 33.

Its success led to productions in London's West End in 1978, and on Broadway a year later, both of which enjoyed considerable success. A major 1996 film of the musical starred Madonna and Antonio Banderas. In 2006, the musical was revived in London with Elena Roger, the first Argentinian actress to play the title role. The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colours comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable.

Joseph, his father’s favourite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves grovelling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel.

Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

A Chorus Of Disapproval

“Alan Ayckbourn’s brilliantly intricate comedy” - GUARDIAN

York Musical Theatre Company

Wednesday 13 November to Saturday 16 November 2013

Directed by Paul Laidlaw

Pendon Amateur Light Operatic Society are taking on The Beggar’s Opera as their next production and all seems fairly normal, until Guy Jones joins the company and life and art begin to be ingeniously linked.

A handsome, lonely widower with the inability to say no to anybody, Guy manages to work his way up the ranks of the company.

Becoming an instant hit with the show’s director Dafydd, Guy also hits it off rather too well with Hannah, the director’s wife and several other of the ladies.

As opening night draws near, Guy begins to realise there are downsides to being the leading man. After all, all the best action happens off-stage.

First premiered in Scarborough in 1984, A Chorus of Disapproval opened the National’s Olivier Theatre in 1985 with a cast including Sir Michael Gambon.
