Britain's Favourite Play

Pick Me Up Theatre

Friday 20 February to Saturday 28 February 2015

Voted the "nation's favourite play" and hailed as "life-enhancing" when it first opened at the National Theatre, Alan Bennett's The History Boys is being staged at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre in York as part of a Pick Me Up Theatre school-themed double bill with Willy Russell's Our Day Out.

In a Northern town in the late 1980s, eight boys are being groomed for Oxbridge.

Hector, the eccentric English master, teaches the boys poetry that he hopes will prepare them for the ‘long littleness of life’.

But the league-table-obsessed Headmaster is not willing to leave them in Hector’s hands alone, and to complement him and the much put-upon history teacher Mrs Lintott, the Head employs Mr Irwin, a young teacher with a unique view on history, and how to get into Oxbridge.

As if soaking up Auden, Housman and understanding the causes of the Second World War weren’t taxing enough, the boys have also to try and unravel their emerging sexualities, and discover what school, university and education are really about.

Featuring: Joe Hudson, Lee West, Riley Anderson, Daniel McGuinness, Sam Baxter, Will Campbell-Burrell, George Stagnell and Sam Hird as THE HISTORY BOYS with lan Small as Hector, Adam Tomlinson as The Headmaster joined by Neil Foster and Barbara Johnson as teachers Mr lrwin and Mrs Lintott.

Our Day Out Image

Our Day Out

Willy Russell's classic musical

Pick Me Up Theatre

Saturday 21 February to Saturday 28 February 2015

Our Day Out was a massive TV hit when it was originally written in 1976 – and in 2009 Willy Russell re-worked the script and added some fantastic songs (the songs and music co-written with director Bob Eaton) to create Our Day Out – The Musical.

Willy Russell said it was "one of the very very best theatrical experiences of my life – I can’t wait to do it again”.

A very funny and heartwarming story, Mrs Kay’s Progress Class are all on board and bound for Alton Towers until Mr Briggs gets on board! The destination changes to a zoo in North Wales but there is no stopping the fun on a trip for the class that always gets left behind.

Big dance numbers, instantly recognisable characters and songs so catchy you’ll be singing them for weeks, all feature.

"I’m in love with Sir
But Sir doesn’t care
Cos Sir’s in love with her
Over there
With the hair
The bleedin’ mare"

Our Day Out is playing alongside Alan Bennett's The History Boys in a school-themed Pick Me Up Theatre season at York's Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

Two lodgers, one bedroom, one unexpected meeting....

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Saturday 11 April 2015

Adapted from the famous farce Box and Cox, by John Madison Morton, Cox & Box was Sir Arthur Sullivan’s first foray into comic opera.

Sergeant Bouncer, an old soldier, has a scheme to get double rent from a single room. By day he lets it to Mr. Box (a printer who is out all night) and by night to Mr. Cox (a hatter who works all day).

His plan works well until Mr. Cox is, unexpectedly, given a day's holiday and the two lodgers meet, and they discover that they share more than the same bed...

The second act will consist of a selection of some of the most well-known and popular Gilbert and Sullivan music, and will chart the history of the famous and prolific partnership.

A mixture of solos, ensemble pieces and chorus numbers, from a range of shows, including The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and H.M.S Pinafore, there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Buddy charts the story of the rock and roll icon Buddy Holly and features all his greatest hits

Pick Me Up Theatre

Wednesday 5 August to Wednesday 12 August 2015

Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story tells the true story of Buddy’s meteoric rise to fame, from the moment in 1957 when That’ll Be The Day hit the airwaves until his tragic death less than two years later on The Day The Music Died. The show features over 20 of Buddy Holly’s greatest hits including That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Everyday, Oh Boy, Not Fade Away, Rave On and Raining In My Heart, plus Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba and the Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace.

The incredible legacy of the young man with glasses, whose musical career spanned an all-too-brief period during the golden days of rock & roll, continues to live on in Buddy.

The original London production ran for more than 5,000 performances, making it one of the longest-running West End musicals

The Sorcerer

The course of love is never smooth, especially when enchantment is at work.

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Thursday 17 September to Saturday 19 September 2015

Love levels all ranks, or so we are told, but in a 1915 village sometimes a little assistance is required. Enter a sorcerer with a love potion and soon that world is turned on its head.

Alexis, heir to the great Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, is to marry Aline Sangazure, who can trace her lineage back to Helen of Troy.

Not content with that, Alexis wishes to pursue his belief that people should not be separated by rank when it comes to marriage and he has a plan to make the whole village happy.

He has engaged John Wellington Wells, a Sorcerer, to secretly administer a love potion, which will send all who drink it to sleep and, when they wake, will cause them to fall madly in love with the first person of the opposite sex they see, who has also drunk the potion.

What could possibly go wrong?
