Les Miserables Image

Les Miserables

Pick Me Up Theatre

Wednesday 17 February to Saturday 27 February 2016

It's in its 30th year in London and it's broken box offices records across the world – Les Misérables is the show that consistently comes out on top in polls to find "the nation's favourite musical". All the more remarkable for a show that was actually panned by most critics when it first opened at the Barbican in 1985.

Pick Me Up are staging a youth production of the show that will give York audiences the chance to see some fantastic musical stars of the future in action.

Based on Victor Hugo's novel, Les Misérables tells the story of an ex-convict, Jean Valjean, and his flight from relentless police inspector Javert after he breaks parole. When Valjean promises to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette, he starts out on a dramatic journey of redemption against the backdrop of the Paris Uprising of 1832.

Featuring the songs I Dreamed A Dream, Bring Him Home, Do You Hear The People Sing and On My Own, Les Misérables is the perfect showcase for the incredibly talented younger performers in Pick Me Up's ranks. Don't miss it

One Man Two Guvnors Image

One Man Two Guvnors

Richard Bean's award-winning smash-hit in London and on Broadway

Pick Me Up Theatre

Wednesday 11 May to Sunday 15 May 2016

Richard Bean's award-winning One Man, Two Guvnors – a smash-hit in London and on Broadway – takes a classic Italian comedy by Goldoni and turns it into a riotous British farce full of slapstick, songs and laugh-out-loud one-liners.

Sacked from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall finds employment with small-time East End gangster Roscoe – who's actually Roscoe's twin sister Rachel in disguise. Roscoe has been killed by Rachel's boyfriend – upper-class twit Stanley. Ever-hungry Francis spots the opportunity for another meal ticket by taking on a second job working for Stanley. And, of course, neither Stanley nor Rachel are aware that they are both employing the same man as their inefficient minder. Confused? It doesn't matter. From start to finish it's a feast of visual and verbal humour.

The original production, starring James Cordon, opened to rave reviews at the National Theatre in 2011, and went on to the West End and Broadway.

Pick Me Up's cast includes Phil Grainger as Francis Henshall, James Potter as Stanley Stubbers, Mick Liversidge as Alfie, Maya Bartley O'Dea as Rachel Crabbe, Maya Tether as Dolly, Nick Lewis as Charlie Clench, Holly Surtees-Smith as Pauline Clench and Sam Baxter as Alan Dangle with live music from The Craze led by James Wood.

Jane Austen's "Persuasion"

Featuring chamber orchestra, period music, Regency costumes, and Irish dancers!

Chamber Opera Chicago

Friday 22 July 2016

Chamber Opera Chicago, a professional not-for-profit opera company devoted to making great opera affordable, is excited to be performing its original musical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, which has toured multiple UK and US cities over the last three years and was a popular event at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The fully staged production features a chamber orchestra with Celtic and period instruments, authentic Regency costuming and sets, beautiful projected scenery, and world-champion Irish dancers. This widely acclaimed stage production features Stage Direction by Nick Sandys (British Director/Actor, Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago), assisted by Kyle Dougan.

Written at the height of her literary career, Persuasion is one of the most compelling love stories ever penned. Anne Elliot has rejected a proposal of marriage from the one man she truly loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded by her godmother that Captain Wentworth was unworthy, but after a separation of nearly a decade, he returns from sea with both rank and fortune. Can Anne win him back? Can he forgive her? Can their lost love be rekindled? Don't miss this authentic rendering of Jane Austen's novel that will transport you back in time!

"No 'Persuasion' needed to see this Chicago treat…Chamber Opera Chicago 's production was a treat for the eyes and ears...astounding!" ~ Emily Scotcher, Isle of Wight County Press

As a child, Frederic was apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates, by his hard-of-hearing nurse, who misheard her master’s instructions.

Today Frederic celebrates the completion of his 21st year, which means he is now free to return to society and respectability, or so he thinks.

York Light Youth

Friday 28 October to Saturday 5 November 2016

Brought to you by York Light Youth, West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet.

Two warring New York City gangs - the American ‘Jets’, led by Riff, and the Puerto Rican ‘Sharks’, led by Bernardo - replace Shakespeare’s feuding families. Their hatred has reached the point where neither can tolerate the other on account of their cultural differences. When Riff's best friend (and former Jet), Tony, and Bernardo's younger sister, Maria, meet at a dance, they instantly fall in love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. In the meantime the Jets challenge the Sharks to a rumble; whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping to end the violence, but her plan goes terribly wrong. After this, can Maria and Tony have the happily-ever-after they have dreamed about?

This fantastic show will be performed by the talented young cast of York Light Youth, whose most recent production was Cats in October 2015. Many of our performers from previous shows return, along with some new faces.
