The Gondoliers

Two brothers, one of them a king – but which one?

The University of York Gilbert & Sullivan Society

Thursday 23 February to Saturday 25 February 2017

The gondolier brothers Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri are the most charming bachelors in all of Venice, and today they will each choose a bride. All is well for 30 happy minutes - until the Grand Inquisitor of Spain appears to inform the brothers that one of them is in fact the son of the late King of Barataria. The only problem is, nobody is quite sure which brother it is.

Elsewhere, the penniless Duke of Plaza-Toro and his overbearing wife arrive from Spain to seek the king, who was married to their daughter Casilda when they were both infants. Unfortunately for Casilda, she is already in love with Luiz the drummer boy. Will any of our couples get their happy ending?

The Gondoliers will be our 45th main show since the society's formation in 1972, and with a stellar cast and cleverly updated script, it promises to be one of our best shows yet!

His chief warlords Macbeth and Banquo return triumphantly from the battlefield – and discover three weird sisters who want to Put A Spell On You and soon they are on course for promotions. Awaiting his return is Macbeth’s ambitious wife who can feel success coming In The Air Tonight. Although Macbeth needs convincing she releases the devil within him and soon there’s blood on his hands. Suspicions are roused about Macbeth’s two-faced False Love and Banquo thinks he’s a a scummy man because it changes When The Sun Goes Down round here. Pretty soon Macbeth’s feeling Bad To The Bone and he finds a murderer to do his dirty work who tells him there’s Nothing Sweet About Me. But doubts start to creep in and Macbeth believes there’s a Ghost in my House and Witchcraft starts to take over. The Yeomen of the Guard Image

The Yeomen of the Guard

A fully-staged production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most dramatic work.

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Thursday 21 September to Saturday 23 September 2017

The Yeomen of the Guard was the closest the highly prolific and successful partnership came to writing a grand opera together and went some way to satisfying Sullivan’s desire to write more about human interest and emotion, and avoid fanciful plots.

A pair of strolling players – Elsie Maynard (a singer) and Jack Point (a Jester) – become caught up in a risky intrigue at The Tower of London.

Colonel Fairfax, a soldier and scientist, has been sentenced to death on a false charge of sorcery. To avoid leaving his estate to his accuser (a cousin) and with the help of the Lieutenant of the Tower, he secretly marries Elsie, who agrees to be blindfolded during the ceremony and expects to be a well-paid widow within the hour.

Aided by former compatriot Yeoman Sergeant Meryll and his family, Fairfax "disappears", leaving the Tower folk in confusion and Elsie as his wife. Jack Point, who is in love with Elsie and has contrived to manipulate everything to his own advantage, is left in utter despair when Fairfax, finally pardoned, reveals his true identity and claims his bride.

Directed by Steve Aylmer, who has over 50 years’ experience of performing and directing Gilbert and Sullivan works, alongside Musical Director Jessica Douglas, this is sure to be another highly successful production from Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company.
