In a brand new adaptation of L Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, the Oddsocks troupe invite you to meet Dorothy as you have never seen her before. "You have to be very clever indeed to be this daft and get away with it!" - William Stafford (Bumonaseat).

The Producers Image

The Producers

Broadway's "Biggest Flop" turns into a smash hit comedy!

Joseph Rowntree Theatre

Thursday 8 February to Saturday 10 February 2018

The Producers is a hilarious musical comedy by acclaimed writer and director Mel Brooks, which took Broadway and the West End by storm, winning a record breaking 12 Tony Awards and 3 Olivier Awards.

Failing Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his mild mannered accountant Leo Bloom scheme to get rich from Broadway's biggest scam. Planning to capitalise on a "flop" show, the twosome secure "the worst play ever written" and "the worst director in town", to open on Broadway with the gloriously offensive and decadently inappropriate Springtime for Hitler.

Come and find out about the chaos that ensues as they cope with how this fool-proof flop actually turns out right!

With a raucous and witty book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (Annie), The Producers keenly mocks Broadway traditions and takes no prisoners, proudly proclaiming itself "an equal opportunities offender!"

Suggested age 12+ Some swearing and probably not for the easily offended.

Sister Act

Get ready to "Raise Your Voice" and join disco queen of angels, Deloris Van Cartier, as she transforms from nightclub diva to a full-time believer!

The University of York Central Hall Musical Society

Thursday 15 February to Saturday 17 February 2018

Come and share your fabulous devotion and get ready to Raise Your Voice as we join disco queen of angels, Deloris Van Cartier, as she transforms from nightclub diva to full-time believer!

Under protective custody after witnessing a murder, this queen of the scene is hidden in a place no-one would think to look - a convent! We wave goodbye to Deloris and welcome Sister Mary Clarence to the stage...(or altar!). As two worlds collide Deloris adds her own sparkle to the lives of her fellow sisters, but, in turn, learns her own valuable lessons about what is truly important.

With dazzling music from Tony and 8 times Oscar winning composer Alan Menken, glistening dance routines inspired by Motown, soul and disco and a whole host of magnificent characters Sister Act is a fabulous tribute to the universal power of friendship, sisterhood and music (with plenty of chances to shake your thing and send all the love to the man above!).

Following the success of last year's Anything Goes, Central Hall Music Society's talented members are back and ready to rock the pews as they hope to Spread The Love (and glitter) around the Joseph Rowntree Theatre for a second year running. Don't miss the funniest and funkiest musical in town!

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company

Saturday 21 April 2018

Jorvik Gilbert & Sullivan Company return to Joseph Rowntree Theatre with this concert performance of Iolanthe.

Iolanthe pits the shepherd Strephon against the House of Lords as they compete for the hand of Phyllis, a ward in Chancery. Unknown to them though Strephon has an advantage - he is half-fairy and the Fairy Queen is prepared to make life miserable for the peers in order to come to his aid.

Well known songs include Loudly Let the Trumpet Bray (the Peers' Chorus) and the Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song in this light- hearted take on political satire - that may still have relevance today.

Doug Scott A Crawl Down The Ogre Image

Doug Scott A Crawl Down The Ogre

Doug will be telling a thrilling story of hard climbing, team-work and survival against all odds.

Due North Events

Monday 8 October 2018

Doug Scott CBE and that other icon of mountaineering, Chris Bonington, made the first ascent of The Ogre (7285m) in the Karakoram range in July 1977. Their climb extended the boundaries of what had been achieved before at that altitude. But it was the subsequent descent from the summit in the dark, turning a catalogue of disasters that would have defeated most people, into an epic which has since entered mountaineering folklore. It was 24 years before The Ogre was climbed again.

Doug will be telling a thrilling story of hard climbing, team work and survival against all odds, in his famously laconic and humorous style. The talk has been refreshed with the aid of recently discovered photographs and material from diaries from other members of the team – Chris Bonington, Nick Estcourt and Clive Rowland - plus cine film and audio tapes recently discovered in an attic and made by the late Mo Anthoine on the expedition.

Proceeds from the talks will help support the work of Community Action Nepal canepal.org.uk. Doug will update the audience on CAN’s progress with post-Nepal Earthquake reconstruction of its projects.

The evening will include a sale of Nepalese goods, Christmas cards and posters, and will be followed by an auction of framed mountaineering prints signed by famous mountaineers, such as Reinhold Messner, Chris Bonington and Stephen Venables, to support the work of the charity. Doug will also be signing copies of his award-winning autobiography Up And About and his latest book, The Ogre – Biography of a mountain and the dramatic story of the first ascent
