
Improvement Works for Phase One of project “Garden Room’ at the Theatre started this week (21 April) thanks to £120,000 raised by fundraising and generous donations from audiences and local businesses.
Works in the courtyard area will ensure visitors have more accessible and better-quality facilities when the work is complete.
The theatre will remain open throughout the first phase of works, with public access only restricted in some areas where construction is taking place.
Joseph Rowntree Theatre Director Dan Shrimpton said:
“We are very much staying open throughout the improvement works and will continue to welcome our valued audiences and performers into the building. There may be some disruption to our outside appearance at the entrance over the summer, however we will work flexibly to continue offering a diverse range of shows. We’d like to thank our audiences in advance for bearing with us during this time, and hope they continue to enjoy all that our much-loved art deco theatre has to offer.”
The main theatre building will be unaffected by the works.

Whilst Phase One is now underway, soaring costs mean the theatre still needs to continue to raise an additional £10,000 towards the project.
