He believes he’s a modern man but also believes in his religious and cultural traditions. However, he must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love, but their choices of husbands are successively less palatable for Tevya. Mayhem happens when an edict arrives to evict the Jews from their village. Their world is turned upside down. This is their world, their life, their tradition.
