The True Story of Florence Foster - Jenkins, the Worst Singer in the World
Glorious! is a joyous and heart-warming comedy play based on the real life of 1940's New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins who had a passion for singing but a voice for disaster.
Considered by many to be "the worst singer in the world" and "the First Lady of the sliding scale", she gave private recitals to fans including Cole Porter, made bizarre recordings and gave a legendary sold out performance at New York's Carnegie Hall at the age of 76.
This delusional and joyously happy woman paid little attention to her critics. Instead she surrounded herself with a circle of devoted friends who were almost as eccentric as she was. It's a story about friends who embraced their delusions and had courage enough to follow their dreams, no matter what.
About the Company
The Rowntree Players, York's oldest amateur theatre company, was established in 1912 by workers at the renowned Rowntree's Chocolate Factory. Initially performing in the factory's Lecture Hall, the group later moved to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, where they still perform today. This community-driven company welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities and is known for its diverse repertoire, focusing on plays but also performing musicals, revues and their renowned annual pantomime (including 2024s sold-out run of Mother Goose!)
