🎭 Volunteer Finance Director
Location: Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York
🕒 Type: Volunteer | Approx. 30 hours/month

Do you enjoy working with numbers and want to support something really special in your local community? We're looking for a Volunteer Finance Director to join the team at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre—a beautiful, much-loved, volunteer-run theatre in the heart of York.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use your professional financial expertise while making a real difference to a thriving local charity. You’ll be part of our Board of Trustees and work closely with our brilliant group of volunteers.

You’ll also help out as a Duty Manager at a couple of performances each month—so you’ll really get to be part of the theatre buzz!

💼 What you’ll be doing:
This is a key role that helps keep our theatre financially healthy. You’ll be:

  • Processing invoices and charges to hirers
  • Preparing budgets and financial reports for the board
  • Reconciling accounts using Xero and our ticketing system
  • Managing bar and front-of-house income (cash and card)
  • Overseeing VAT and Performing Rights payments

You’ll be fully supported and working alongside others—it’s very much a team effort.

👀 What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for someone with a solid financial background who’s ready to bring their expertise to a vibrant community setting.

Essential:

  • A recognised finance or accounting qualification (e.g. AAT, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, or equivalent)
  • Experience in finance, bookkeeping, or accounting
  • Organised, reliable, and attentive to detail
  • Willing to work collaboratively and get involved in theatre life
  • Able to commit around 30 hours a month, including trustee meetings and show nights

Desirable:

  • Experience using Xero or similar accounting software
  • Previous charity or trustee experience

🎉 Why get involved?
This year marks our 90th anniversary, and we’ve got exciting plans to improve our facilities for everyone who uses and loves the theatre. By joining us, you’ll:

  • Help guide the financial future of a treasured local venue
  • Be part of a fun, friendly, and passionate team
  • Gain valuable board-level and charity finance experience
  • Know that you’re making a genuine difference in your community
