Trustees

🎭 Volunteer Finance Director

Location: Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York
Type: Volunteer | Approx. 30 hours/month

Do you enjoy working with numbers and want to support something really special in your local community? We're looking for a Volunteer Finance Director to join the team at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre—a beautiful, much-loved, volunteer-run theatre in the heart of York.

This is a brilliant chance to use your skills (or build new ones!) while making a real difference to a thriving local charity. You’ll be part of our Board of Trustees and work closely with our Assistant Finance Director and a lovely group of volunteers.

You’ll also help out as a Duty Manager at a couple of performances each month—so you’ll really get to be part of the theatre buzz!

💼 What you’ll be doing:

This is a key role that helps keep our theatre financially healthy. You’ll be:

  • Processing invoices and charges to hirers

  • Putting together budgets and financial reports for the board

  • Reconciling accounts using Xero and our ticketing system

  • Managing bar and front-of-house income (cash and card)

  • Taking care of VAT and Performing Rights payments

You’ll be fully supported and working alongside others—it’s very much a team effort.

👀 What we’re looking for:

You don’t have to be a finance expert (though if you are—amazing!). We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has some experience or interest in finance, bookkeeping, or accounting

  • Enjoys working with others and is happy to get involved

  • Is organised, reliable, and pays attention to the little things

  • Can commit to around 30 hours a month, including monthly trustee meetings and show nights

Experience with Xero or similar software is helpful, but not essential—we’re happy to support you in learning.

🎉 Why get involved?

This year is our 90th anniversary, and we’ve got exciting plans to improve our facilities for everyone who uses and loves the theatre. By joining us, you'll:

  • Help guide the future of a treasured local venue

  • Be part of a fun, friendly, and passionate team

  • Gain experience at board level and in charity finance

  • Know that you’re making a genuine difference in your community

💬 Sound like you?

We’d love to chat! Whether you’re experienced and want to give back, or you’re looking to grow your skills in a new setting, we’d love to hear from you.
