York Light Youth

In 2013 the Management Committee of York Light Opera Company decided to widen the appeal of the Company by launching York Light Youth, open to young people aged 11-18 (Y7-Y13). YLY was formally established in July 2013 as a sub-branch of the main company and enjoyed great success with its premier production, Joseph and the Amazing technicolour Dreamcoat, followed in 2014 by High School Musical on Stage! and Les Miserables School Edition.

York Light Youth’s objectives are:

  • to educate young people in the performing arts
  • to further young people’s appreciation and taste in these arts
  • to nurture and develop young vocal, dance and acting talent.

The Sub-branch of the Company is run by a Management Committee, appointed and overseen by the Main Committee of YLOC and its Board of Directors.

Similar to YLOC, YLY generally performs one show a year in October/November at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre. For each show, we engage a director, musical director and choreographer. Rehearsals run from from July, continuing over the summer. For all our shows we hold auditions, usually followed by casting workshops, but this procedure may vary depending on the requirements of the show. For some of our productions we may lower the age limit but this depends very much on the production.
