The marketing team is made up of a team of volunteers each of whom look after a specific area of the theatre marketing. They do this working remotely with specific tools, processes and campaigns and this is generally for around 2-3 hours per week. The team then meets once a month to review, amend and plan.
We thought it would be interesting for you to get a glimpse of how this is done
Name: Danielle
Role: Marketing Volunteer Email Marketing
What is a typical volunteering day/week?
A normal week consists of speaking to other volunteers about what this week's email will include. Then I will create the email using sources given by the theatre and create an email that will engage the audience. Once I have finished, I will send the email off to a few of the marketing volunteers to check over my work and then the email will be sent to our mailing list.
What takes up most of your time?
Creating eye catching titles and subject lines to catch our audiences attention. Being creative is so important when being in marketing, it gives you a chance to put your own thoughts and ideas into your work.
What do you enjoy most about the role?
I enjoy being creative and thinking of new ways to engage with the theatre's broad audience. Talking to the team is also enjoyable as we all get on and support each other.
What is the most frustrating?
I would say nothing frustrates me, If I am ever struggling on my email there is always someone available to talk to about the issue and help if needed. The volunteer group at the theatre is very intimate and friendly.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
Due to Covid - 19 many things have changed including the types of emails I create. Instead of doing an email with in depth details about each show that is on, a weekly email is now created with new shows, community news and ways of supporting the theatre. This is a way of us staying close to our customers and giving them up to date news on what we are doing as a theatre to support our community during this difficult time.
What’s been a highlight of your work?
The highlight has definitely been learning more about the marketing world and being able to work independently as well as within a team on emails. Volunteering at The Joseph Rowntree Theatre has given me marketing experience to prepare me for leaving university. I will take what I have learnt here into my future job role and would recommend it to anyone wanting some experience in marketing. Flexible work and chances to progress will help in anyone's quest to personal growth.
The theatre may be currently closed, but there are still ways to get involved. If you are interested in getting involved in Marketing, there are plenty of opportunties available. You can find out more by right here, or you can fill out a quick online volunteering form to register your interest.
