This year our theatre is celebrating its 85th birthday. We have stood the test of time and are the only remaining Rowntree building still used for its original purpose. But now we need to raise £90,000 to make sure that our lovely art deco building remains fit for use over the next 85 years. 

The money will be used to repair and shore up our roof, which is in desperate need of repair. 

Because of the unique construction of the main roof, this means taking the slates off, refurbishing them, laying insulation, adding solar panels and replacing the vintage tiles. As a Grade II listed building we cannot simply strip the roof and replace with modern tiles.

We need to make sure that the fabric of our theatre is safe. The new insulation and solar panels will significantly reduce our operating costs and also the impact we have on the environment. The repairs will help make us more sustainable for future generations. 

Raise the Roof is the first step on the road to making major theatre improvements. We must make sure the existing building is sound before making any further alterations to expand the theatre. 

Without a new roof, we will not be able to function as a community theatre and so not achieve our ultimate ambition, which is to be an inspiring community hub for performing arts and other entertainment.

Even though the theatre is closed, there are still ways you can help us to raise the money we need. 

How about donating all the money you would have spent buying that coffee on the way to work during the week or the round of beers in the local pub on a Friday evening. Or get your friends and family involved in a home-based challenge, such as swing ball tournament in the garden, or a board game competition. Maybe set up a family quiz or neighbourhood virtual quiz. Use your daily exercise time to run, cycle or walk 5km, donate £5 to our appeal and then nominate five others to do the same – posting pictures on social media and tag Joseph Rowntree Theatre, to encourage others to get involved. The possibilities are endless!
