Become a Trustee of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre

The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a much-loved independent theatre and community venue in York, run by a Charity. We are seeking additional Trustees to join our Board and play an active, hands-on role in supporting the theatre’s day-to-day operation as well as its long-term future. 

We believe theatre should be welcoming, accessible and inspiring for everyone and the Joseph Rowntree Theatre plays a vital role in the local community. Trustees of the Joseph Rowntree Theatre are also Directors of the charity, and this is a practical role for people who are willing to get involved and contribute their time, skills and experience.

As a Trustee, you will help safeguard the theatre’s values and purpose, support its sustainability, and ensure it continues to serve the diverse communities of York for generations to come.

Current Vacancies

We have vacancies for the following roles:

• Box Office Director - supporting the operation of our box office alongside another trustee

The role activities include:

• Managing the theatre's box office operation using Spektrix, our ticketing and CRM system.
• Working with volunteers and trustees to set up shows and events, ensuring ticket prices, offers, and event information are accurate.
• Recruiting, training, supporting, and coordinating our team of box office volunteers.
• Planning and coordinating the volunteer rota 

• Finance Director - supporting our financial planning alongside another trustee

The role activities include:

• Ensuring accurate processing to finance payments
• Planning budgets, both operational and capital projects
• Supporting the completion of quartely returns for VAT, Gift Aid, etc

Do you have skills or experience?

To support the charity for the longer term we are also keen to hear from people with experience or professional expertise in:

• Building or facilities management

• Health and safety
  
  

What are we looking for?

For any of our roles no previous trustee or director experience. What matters most is a commitment to the theatre, a willingness to take responsibility, and an ability to work collaboratively as part of a small, dedicated team.

What the roles also involve

In addition to strategic oversight and governance responsibilities, Trustees are expected to be hands-on. This includes:

• Attending Board meetings (typically held in the evenings)
  
  
• Helping set the strategic direction of the theatre
  
  
• Acting as Directors of the charity supporting the day-to-day operation of the theatre.
  
  
• Providing practical support and informed decision-making based on your skills and experience
  
  
• Volunteering as a  Duty Manager during performances at the theatre, alongside other Trustees
  • Duty Managers play a key role in ensuring performances and events run safely and smoothly
  • Being the responsible on-site presence during events.
  • Full training and support will be provided
  • Expectation to cover around 24 sessions over a year.
