We’ve spent the last few weeks celebrating the Joseph Rowntree Theatre’s 85 years entertaining York communities. It’s now time to look to the future and how we plan on continuing to entertain you for another 85 years!
We hope that we’ll be able to reopen our doors later this year, when lockdown restrictions are lifted, and we’re given the green light to once more enter stage left. The safety of our audiences, performers and volunteers is paramount. That’s why we’ve invested in making our theatre as covid-safe as possible. If you were lucky enough to come to one of our pre-Christmas shows, you’ll have experienced the new procedures we’ve put into place and the precautions we’re taking. We are doing everything to ensure that returning to the theatre is a safe and pleasant experience for everyone.
We’ve stood the test of time, the theatre is the only remaining Rowntree building still used for its original purpose. But after 85 years the building needs some TLC. To safeguard the future of our beautiful theatre and our wonderful shows, we have to look after the fabric of our building – the bricks and mortar. We have exciting plans afoot to develop and expand the theatre building, making us more accessible to wider audiences. First, we have to look to the roof, which is in need of repair. Our Raise the Roof Appeal, which we launched last year, is an important initial step in raising the money needed to carry out this work. We’ve made headway, with some fantastic fundraising activities, and more are planned for this year.
